The Mediterranean diet has been shown to promote health and longevity. Studies have shown its health benefits include protecting the colon, prostate, and brain. The effect on the brain was the most surprising. It is known that we lose brain cells with aging which can hinder our learning and memory skills.
After measuring almost 1,000 people over 3 years, scientists found those who followed more closely the mediterranean style of eating had maintained healthier brains, with less loss of volume, versus those who did not. The results were reported by the American Academy of Neurology.
The mediterranean diet includes large amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans and cereal grains such as wheat and rice, moderate amounts of fish, dairy and wine, and limited red meat and poultry. Scientists believe the diet may provide long-term protective effects.
