How to Read a Digestive Enzyme Label — Activity Units, Blends, and What to Ignore
Digestive enzyme labels are unusually hard to compare, and not entirely by accident. The single number most shoppers reach for — milligrams — is close to meaningless here, and the format that hides the most information is also the most common.
Here is what to actually look at.
Milligrams do not measure an enzyme
This is the thing to understand first, because everything else follows from it.
For a vitamin, weight is a sensible measure. 500 mg of vitamin C is 500 mg of vitamin C, and two products with the same number are giving you the same thing.
Enzymes do not work that way. An enzyme is a catalyst — its value is how much substrate it can convert, not how much it weighs. Two protease preparations of identical weight can differ several-fold in actual activity depending on the source organism, the fermentation, purity, and how the material was handled.
So "500 mg enzyme blend" tells you the weight of powder in the capsule. It tells you almost nothing about what that powder will do. A high milligram number can represent a large amount of weakly active material.
Activity units are the real measurement. They are determined by standardized assays that measure how much substrate the enzyme converts under defined conditions — the only meaningful way to state an enzyme's strength.
The activity units, and what they mean
Each enzyme type has its own unit, which is why the labels look cryptic. There is no universal enzyme unit, and the numbers are not comparable across enzyme types — 3,500 of one thing is not "more" than 500 of another.
- DU (Dextrinizing Units) — amylase, on starch
- HUT (Hemoglobin Units, Tyrosine basis) — protease, at acidic pH
- PC (Protease C) and SAPU (Spectrophotometric Acid Protease Units) —
proteases assayed under different conditions
- AP — peptidase
- FIP (Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique) — lipase, on fat
- ALU (Acid Lactase Units) — lactase, on lactose
- GalU (Galactosidase Units) — alpha-galactosidase, on the bean and
cruciferous-vegetable carbohydrates
- AGU (Amyloglucosidase Units) — glucoamylase
- MaltU — acid maltase
- SU (Sumner Units) — invertase, on sucrose
You do not need to memorize these. What matters is that they are present at all, and that each enzyme carries its own number.
The right way to use them is to compare the same enzyme between two products — lactase in ALU against lactase in ALU. Comparing DU against FIP is meaningless.
The proprietary blend problem
Here is the format that should make you skeptical:

Seven impressive names and one number covering all of them.
This is legal, and it is popular for a reason. It permits a formula where one cheap enzyme makes up 480 of those 500 mg and the remaining six are present in trace amounts that do nothing. The label looks identical to a formula where the seven are meaningfully balanced. You cannot tell them apart, and that is the point.
There is a legitimate version of the argument — companies say blends protect formulation IP from competitors. Judge it for yourself. But the practical effect is that you cannot evaluate what you are buying, and the number that would let you is the one being withheld.
Whether each enzyme carries its own activity number is the single most informative thing on the panel. It is the fastest way to sort products, and it is what we would tell you to check on any brand, ours included.
What else is worth checking
Enzyme source: plant/microbial versus animal. Most modern enzyme supplements are fungal- or bacterial-fermented — typically from Aspergillus species. These tend to stay active across a wider pH range, which matters because they have to survive stomach acid. Pancreatin is the animal-derived alternative, usually porcine, which rules it out for vegetarians and for kosher and halal diets.
Coverage against your actual diet. More enzymes is not automatically better; the right ones is better. If dairy is your issue, a formula heavy on protease and light on lactase is not the one. Match the panel to your meals — covered food by food in which digestive enzyme breaks down what.
Multiple proteases. Protein digestion spans a wide pH range, from the acidic stomach to the near-neutral small intestine, and no single protease is active across all of it. Two or three proteases assayed under different conditions is a sign of a formula built by someone thinking about where the enzyme actually has to work.
Serving size versus capsule count. A 120-count bottle at three capsules per serving is a 40-day supply, not a 120-day one. This is where per-serving cost comparisons usually go wrong.
Allergens and certifications. Enzymes are fermented on growth media, and residues can matter to sensitive people. Look for explicit allergen statements rather than their absence.
Claims that have gone too far. A digestive enzyme label promising to heal your gut, cure a named condition, or fix a disease has told you something important about the company. Supplements make structure-function statements — supports digestion of protein — and carry the FDA disclaimer. A product promising to treat a disease is either mislabeled or misleading.
A three-step comparison
Standing in front of two bottles:
- Is there an activity unit next to each enzyme? If one product has them and
the other has a proprietary blend, you can only actually evaluate one of them.
- Does the panel cover the foods that give you trouble? Lactase for dairy,
alpha-galactosidase for beans and cruciferous vegetables, lipase for rich meals, multiple proteases for large protein meals.
- What is the real per-serving cost? Divide by servings, not capsules.
That is most of it. Everything else — proprietary names, certifications, the label design — is secondary to those three.
